Local Missions

God calls us to live out our faith and serve our community. Whether it’s tutoring, feeding the hungry or reaching out to the lonely, there is a place for you to serve. We’d love to help you connect with a ministry that you care about. To find out how to get involved, contact Kathy Lefler, Director of Lay Ministries, at 682-6518 or Kathy@ehumc.org

Crafting for Christ

You don’t have to be skilled at crafts to be part of Crafting for Christ – all that’s needed is a desire to bring smiles to people in need of an enjoyable diversion. We visit nursing homes, the Children’s Home or the Veteran’s Hospital and make crafts with the people living there. We also create craft kits for the kids at the Downtown Day Care Center.

“Fun with Friends” - Respite Care

“Fun with Friends” is an afternoon of games, crafts and snacks for special needs children and their siblings. It also offers their parents or caregivers some much-needed time off. It’s held four times a year (February, May, September and December) on a Sunday afternoon in Hedrick Hall.

Experience working with special needs children is not needed. However, Boundary Awareness Training and a background check are required.

Tutoring Ministry

You can make a difference in the life of a child by serving as a tutor or “lunch buddy” at Jefferson Elementary School. The one-on-one attention you share helps kids succeed in school. Our tutoring ministry helps kids with reading and math on Thursday afternoons at Jefferson from 4:15-5:15 p.m. “Lunch Buddies” get together with a student one day a week to play games, talk and offer friendship. Training is offered through the school district.

Veterans’ Outreach

We share time in fellowship and ministry with those who have served us and our country. We might visit the nearby Robert Dole Veterans Administration Facility and play BINGO or billiards. We also decorate the facility for holidays.

Handyman Repair Team

If you’re handy at making minor building repairs at the church and in the homes of the elderly and shut-ins, we can use your skills! Tasks include painting, installing a shelf or repairing a door. You’ll be reimbursed for supplies you purchase in order to make repairs.

Saturday Lunches for the Homeless

We prepare and serve a warm, nourishing meal for the homeless in Wichita on a Saturday. People are needed to cook or serve and clean up.

Sack Lunches for the Homeless

We get together on the second Wednesday of the month at 5 p.m. to make 100 sack lunches for the homeless served by United Methodist Open Door. It takes about an hour to help and helpers of all ages are welcome to assist.

Food Pantry

Next time you’re at the grocery store, take a minute to pick up an extra food item (non-perishable) to donate to this ministry. You can drop it off in the bin in the Mission Center in the Coffee House and it will be delivered to United Methodist Open Door and shared with the hungry. Jars of peanut butter are always needed!

Christmas Sharing Tree

We reach out to children living in foster homes at Christmas time. In November, simply select an “ornament” from our Christmas tree and purchase a gift listed on the tag. Bring the unwrapped gift back to the church and it will be given to a child on Christmas morning.

Backpacks and School Supplies Drive

Not every family can afford to buy school supplies. That’s why we have a ministry that makes sure kids have the tools they need to succeed in school. We gather backpacks and supplies every August.

LOVE Wichita

Every April, East Heights joins with churches in our city to serve others and share God’s light and love. More than two dozen churches serve in this ministry. Projects include park clean ups, home repairs, painting and gardening. Don’t miss this opportunity to make a difference in your city! Get more information at www.lovewichita.org.
