Program Staff
Brenda Heard, Director of Music and Worship Ministries
Since December of 1996, the music at East Heights has been under the direction of Brenda Heard. Brenda is continually seeking creative ways to use music which brings new life to worship. She understands that the mission of the music department is to glorify God through music by energizing and adding to worship rather than becoming a performance and draw attention away from worship.

Brenda is currently in the candidacy process toward becoming a Deacon in the United Methodist Church and attends Saint Paul School of Theology.  A lifelong Methodist and graduate in Music Education from Wichita State University, Brenda brings a real passion for music in all styles that communicates the great traditions of the church in both old and new ways.

In addition, she has a great love for children.  This past summer, Brenda and her family traveled with the Watoto Ministry Team to Uganda to build a home in an orphan's village for children who have been deprived of their families by the AIDS epidemic.

Brenda's husband Tony is a lieutenant with the Wichita Fire Department.  Her daughters, Emily and Hallie, are in 12th and 6th grades, respectively.  The Heards are granted permission to live in their home by their two cats, Yinyue and XinXin--whose names are Chinese for "music" and "faith."  In her spare time, Brenda studies--and occasionally manages a round of golf.

Julie Calhoun, Director of Children's Ministries
Julie joined the staff in the fall of 2002 as the Children's Day Out Director, moving into the role as the Director of Children's Ministries in January of 2003.  A graduate of the University of Wyoming with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education, Julie has the opportunity to guide the children she loves in their journey with Christ.  Julie also shares her gift of music as a worship leader at Spirit Alive and as a member of Broken, a band led by the Spirit Alive Music Director, Jared Brown.  When she's not hanging out with the "REALKids" at East Heights, Julie is spending time with her husband, Mark, their sons, Zach and Jake, and their 130 lb. dog, Samson.  Julie's vision for children's ministry is that children are given the tools to become believers and that, as followers of God, they are expected to live out their faith in the world, using their gifts to become advocates for the "least of these."

Paige Nelson, Director of Youth Ministries
To survive in youth ministry you must have a passion for young people.  Paige came to be in ministry with the youth of East Heights shortly after she graduated from Kansas State University.  She began her ministry as a 6th grade Sunday school teacher, then as a member of the interim youth staff.  She was called into full-time youth ministry and became the Director of Youth Ministry in September of 1993.  God’s ministry through her is rooted in the desire to walk alongside youth on their faith journey.  The hope is for growth in their relationship with God through reaching out to others, digging into God’s Word, worshipping, and creating friendship and fun with others on the journey.  Loving youth is a full-time adventure.  A companion with her in ministry is her husband, Scott.  When they are not with the youth, they love to spend time with their two dogs, Duke and Zeus and their families.  It is important to Paige that all youth know that East Heights is a place where they are welcome and loved no matter what.

Christopher joined the staff in July of 2006 as the Director of Adult Christian Education and Small Group Ministries. Christopher is a declared candidate for ministry in the United Methodist Church and anticipates attending Saint Paul School of Theology in the near future. If he seems familiar, it's likely because Christopher is the son/stepson of former East Heights members Marlyn and Monica Eshelman; the grandson of the late Olga and Aven Eshelman; and the husband of Robin, who is the Director of East Heights Preschool. Together they have two sons, Ian and Aaron.  Christopher has a passion for theology and adult education and encourages you to become intentional about your Christian journey through involvement in Disciple, Church school and other small group opportunities at East Heights!
